The second phase of the General Elections 2024 commenced at 7 AM, spanning across 88 Polling Centers (PCs) in 13 States and Union Territories (UTs), marking a significant milestone in India’s democratic process. By 7 PM, the approximate voter turnout stood at 60.96%, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of citizens to participate in shaping the nation’s future through their votes.

From bustling urban centers to remote tribal villages, voters from diverse backgrounds demonstrated their dedication to the electoral process by braving adverse weather conditions and long queues at polling stations. Newlyweds, senior citizens, tribals, IT professionals, persons with disabilities (PwDs), women, and youngsters were among the enthusiastic voters, reflecting the inclusive nature of Indian democracy.

The successful completion of polling in 14 States/UTs speaks volumes about the efficiency and dedication of the Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Shri Gyanesh Kumar and Shri Sukhbir Singh Sandhu. Stringent security measures were put in place to ensure a peaceful atmosphere conducive to free and fair voting, with webcasting deployed in over 1 lakh polling stations to monitor proceedings.

In several constituencies across Bihar, including Banka, Madhepura, Khagaria, and Munger, polling hours were extended until 6 PM to accommodate voters amidst scorching weather conditions. Special arrangements such as shamianas, drinking water facilities, medical kits, and fans were made available to ensure the comfort and well-being of voters.

The spirit of democracy was evident as polling officials and voters adorned traditional attire, turning the electoral process into a festive occasion known as “Chunav ka Parv”. In Sikar, Rajasthan, and Varuna constituency in Karnataka, women voters and polling staff, respectively, embraced their cultural heritage while exercising their democratic right.

The significance of this phase extended beyond mere participation, with 46 villages in Bastar and Kanker PCs in Chhattisgarh witnessing polling booths set up within their communities for the first time in a Lok Sabha Election. This initiative aimed to enhance accessibility and convenience for villagers, reflecting the Commission’s commitment to inclusivity.

In addition to these new polling stations, special efforts were made to facilitate voting among marginalized groups such as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs), the elderly, first-time voters, women, and transgender individuals. The participation of PwD voter Vijay Sahu, who arrived at the Khajuraho Lok Sabha constituency on his motorized tricycle, symbolized the Commission’s commitment to ensuring equal access to the electoral process.

The involvement of prominent personalities, including cricketing legends Anil Kumble, Rahul Dravid, and Javagal Srinath, added to the significance of the electoral process. By casting their votes and encouraging youth participation, these icons underscored the importance of civic engagement and the electoral process in shaping the nation’s future.

The spirit of democracy transcended geographical barriers as voters from remote areas, such as Raima Valley in the Dhalai Assembly segment of Tripura, traveled to polling stations by boats to exercise their franchise. This display of determination exemplified the unwavering commitment of citizens to democracy, irrespective of challenges.

In conclusion, the second phase of General Elections 2024 witnessed a remarkable display of inclusivity, enthusiasm, and commitment across 13 States/UTs. Through their active participation, voters reaffirmed their belief in the democratic ideals of equality, representation, and collective decision-making, laying the foundation for a stronger and more vibrant democracy.
