Former Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay will contest against TMC leader Debangshu Bhattacharya in the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal.
The BJP released its fifth list of candidates on Sunday, setting up a contest between Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay and TMC leader Debangshu Bhattacharya in the Tamluk constituency of West Bengal.
During campaign meetings, Bhattacharya rallied supporters with the slogan ‘Khela Hobe’ (the game is on), signaling the commencement of the fight for people’s democratic rights amid BJP governance.
Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who was nominated as the BJP candidate shortly after stepping down as a Calcutta High Court judge, sparked controversy when he stated in a recent interview with a Bengali channel that he cannot ‘pick between Gandhi and Godse’.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh on Monday criticized Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former judge of the Calcutta High Court and current Bharatiya Janata Party’s Lok Sabha election candidate, for his recent comments regarding Mahatma Gandhi and Nathuram Godse.
“It is worse than pathetic that a judge of the Calcutta High Court, who resigned to contest the Lok Sabha polls as a BJP candidate blessed by none other than the Prime Minister, now says that he cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse,” the Congress leader slammed.
“This is totally unacceptable, and his candidature should be withdrawn forthwith by those who spare no effort to appropriate the Mahatma’s legacy. What will the Father of the Do-nation do to protect the Father of the Nation?” Jairam Ramesh posted on X.
The former jurist, now turned politician, expressed his intention to read the book authored by Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, to understand the motivations behind the assassination.”As someone from the legal profession, I must try and understand the other side of the story. I must read his (Nathuram Godse) writings and understand what triggered him to kill Mahatma Gandhi. Until then, I cannot choose between Gandhi and Godse,”
TMC has nominated candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, commencing its campaign with a display of power. Shantiram Mahato will contest from Purulia, and Arup Chakrabarty from Bankura.
Additionally, Sujata Mondal, Dr. Sharmila Sarkar, Asit Kumar Mal, and Satabdi Roy have received TMC tickets from Bishnupur, Bardhaman Purba, Bolpur, and Birbhum respectively.
In the previous polls, TMC secured 22 seats while BJP surprised with 18. The Congress claimed the remaining two. In 2019, BJP-led NDA won 303 seats, overshadowing the Congress at 52. The Lok Sabha elections to be held in April-May-June this year.
