Indian Navy Swiftly Responds to Missile Attack on Crude Oil Tanker by Houthi Militants
On April 26, the Indian Navy swiftly intervened to assist the Panama-flagged crude oil tanker MV Andromeda Star, which came under missile attack from Houthi militants in the Red Sea. The vessel, with 30 crew members onboard, including 22 Indians, was targeted by Iranian-backed Houthi militants who launched three anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen.
In response to the attack, the Indian Navy’s destroyer INS Kochi was deployed to provide assistance to MV Andromeda Star. Despite sustaining minor damage, all crew members were reported safe. The vessel, operated by Seychelles, continued its transit to the next port under the escort and protection of INS Kochi.
The swift action of INS Kochi, which intercepted the vessel and conducted an aerial reconnaissance mission with helicopter support, underscores the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security in the region. Additionally, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was dispatched to assess residual risks and ensure the safety of the crew and the vessel.
This incident highlights the growing concerns over attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea by Houthi militants. In recent weeks, there have been several incidents of merchant vessels requiring assistance in the Western Indian Ocean due to attacks by militants.
