Why Covid cases are rising, why you needn’t worry

The Health Ministry has recently announced new Covid-19 cases mainly in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala, with a new subvariant, NB.1.8.1, detected in Tamil Nadu. Surges in global Covid-19 cases are observed, particularly in South-East Asia, with Singapore registering a rise in infections. As of Tuesday, India reported 1,010 active cases, predominantly in Kerala (43%) and Maharashtra (21%).
Deaths linked to Covid-19 have been recorded, though specifics are forthcoming. Current active cases are few, limited to only nine states. Covid-19 related hospital admissions have not risen significantly, and the majority of patients admitted have underlying health conditions, indicating mild cases. Elements such as declining immunity, emerging variants, seasonal trends, and diminished testing could lead to the increase, suggesting that Covid-19 is becoming a regular pattern similar to influenza.
High-risk populations, such as those with weakened immune systems and significant comorbidities, are especially susceptible to serious consequences as public health protocols are eased. Variants of Concern (VOC) that might demonstrate higher transmissibility or escape immunity are presently unclassified, whereas Variants of Interest (VOI) display notable mutations.
The WHO is tracking eight variants of SARS-CoV-2, including one variant of interest, JN.1, which accounted for 16.3% of sequenced cases recently. In Singapore, two JN.1 lineages lead local cases but seem no more transmissible. In India, BA.2 and JN.1 are widespread, showing comparable results regarding severity.
Precautions consist of using masks in busy areas, self-isolating when experiencing mild symptoms, practicing good hygiene, and keeping track of health, particularly for those at high risk. Prompt medical care is advised for critical symptoms like trouble breathing or a continuous severe cough.
