Election Commission Chief Will Attend First Voter’s Funeral

Rajiv Kumar, the chief election commissioner (CEC), traveled to Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, on November 5 to see the grieving family of Shyam Saran Negi, the first voter of independent India, who passed away at the age of 106.

Mr. Kumar, CEC, will be present for Shyam Saran Negi Negi’s funeral.

On November 2, Negi cast his postal ballot in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections that will take place the following month.

On October 23, 1951, Negi cast his first ballot in the nation’s first general elections at the Kalpa polling place.

On November 2 of this year, he voted for the 34th time, which was also his final.

Negi had been a national symbol since 2014. He was born in the Himachal Pradesh tribal district of Kinnaur in July 1917. In the Lok Sabha elections, he cast 16 votes.

Negi, a teacher by profession, has cast a ballot in every election since 1951, according to the Chief Electoral Office of Himachal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for Shyam Saran Negi’s passing and promised to motivate all citizens, particularly the young, to fulfill their civic duty and vote in the elections.
