A U.S. strategy for Gaza, reviewed by Reuters on Friday, suggests a 60-day truce along with the release of 28 Israeli hostages, both living and deceased, in the initial week, and the freedom of 125 Palestinian prisoners serving life sentences along with the remains of 180 deceased Palestinians.

The proposal, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump and mediators from Egypt and Qatar, stipulates that assistance will be sent to Gaza immediately after Hamas approves the ceasefire deal. The agreement specifies that Hamas will free the remaining 30 hostages once a lasting ceasefire is established.

On Thursday, the White House announced that Israel consented to the U.S. ceasefire plan. The militant group Hamas indicated to Reuters that it is currently evaluating the plan and will provide a response on Friday or Saturday.

Significant differences between Hamas and Israel have hindered earlier efforts to reinstate a ceasefire that collapsed in March.

Israel has demanded that Hamas fully disarm and be dissolved as both a military and governing entity, and that the return of all 58 hostages still in Gaza must occur before it will consent to ending the conflict.

Hamas has declined the request to surrender its arms and insists that Israel needs to withdraw its forces from Gaza and agree to cease hostilities.

Israel initiated its operation in Gaza following the destructive Hamas assault in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 individuals and the capture of 251 Israelis taken hostage into Gaza, based on Israeli counts. According to Gaza health officials, the ongoing Israeli military operation has resulted in over 54,000 Palestinian deaths and has devastated the enclave.
