On April 22, 2025, a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed 26 lives, primarily Indian tourists, and injured 17 others. Gunmen disguised in army fatigues opened fire before fleeing into nearby forests. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack, stating that targeting civilians is unacceptable and those responsible must be brought to justice through credible, lawful means. He urged India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint, emphasizing that a military solution is no solution. The incident has heightened tensions between the two nations, with India accusing Pakistan of involvement—a claim Pakistan denies. The attack has also led to a significant decline in tourism in the region.
