Ukrainian officials reported early Sunday that the biggest Russian drone assault since the war escalated in 2022 resulted in the death of a woman in the Kyiv region and wounded at least three others, as Moscow intensified its attacks after peace discussions on Friday.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia deployed 273 drones by 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT), primarily focusing on the central Kyiv region along with the Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk regions in the eastern part of the country.

According to information supplied by the air force, this marked Russia’s most significant drone assault on Ukraine during the conflict. On the night before the third anniversary of Russia’s comprehensive invasion of Ukraine on February 23, Moscow deployed an unprecedented 267 drones.

On Friday, the first face-to-face discussions in three years between Russia and Ukraine did not succeed in achieving the temporary truce that Kyiv and its allies have been advocating for. The 100 minutes of discussions in Istanbul resulted in a deal to exchange 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Monday. Ukrainian authorities reported that a prolonged Russian drone assault overnight on Sunday resulted in the death of a 28-year-old woman in the capital region and left at least three others injured, among them a 4-year-old child.

“Unfortunately, as a result of the enemy attack in the Obukhiv district, a woman died from her injuries,” Mykola Kalashnik, governor of the Kyiv region, posted on Telegram.

Kyiv and the region around it as well as the eastern part of Ukraine were under raid warnings for nine straight hours overnight before they were called off at around 9 a.m. local time (0600 GMT). Air defence units were engaged several times trying to repel attacks, the military said on Telegram.

“It’s been a tough night. The Russians have always used war and attacks to intimidate everyone in negotiations,” Andriy Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Centre for Countering Disinformation, said on Telegram about Sunday’s attack.

Air defense forces eliminated 88 of the drones during the night. The assault also involved 128 simulator drones that were lost en route without striking any targets, according to a statement from Ukraine’s air force on Telegram.

On Saturday, Kyiv reported that a Russian drone strike resulted in the deaths of nine civilians when it struck a shuttle bus in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine. Zelenskiy described the attack as “intentional” and called for tougher sanctions against Moscow, which claimed it targeted a military site.

Kalashnik stated that everyone hurt in the Obukhiv district, located directly south of Kyiv city, was taken to the hospital. He mentioned that multiple residential structures were affected in the region. In Kyiv, the city’s military administration reported on Telegram that debris from a destroyed drone impacted the roof of a non-residential structure. It stated that there were no reported injuries.
