Trump Releases Federal Budget Plan with Major Spending Cuts

Former President Donald Trump has introduced a proposed federal budget for 2026 that aims to reduce government spending by $163 billion. The plan includes sharp reductions in domestic funding while increasing support for defense and border control efforts.
The proposal reduces non-defense discretionary spending by 23%, impacting programs in education, housing, and health research. Agencies like the NIH and CDC could see their budgets slashed by more than 40%.
Defense spending would increase by 13%, and homeland security would receive a nearly 65% bump. About $1.27 billion is allocated to strengthen border security and carry out large-scale deportations.
The EPA would face a 55% funding cut, eliminating multiple environmental justice projects. NASA would see its budget cut by 24%, affecting programs like the SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft.
While the plan reduces foreign aid by $49 billion, it sets aside $3.2 billion over three years to support the World Bank’s fund for the poorest nations.
Supporters, including Trump’s former budget director, say the cuts are necessary to streamline government and emphasize national priorities. Critics, however, argue that the reductions could harm critical public services and scientific work. Senator Susan Collins, for example, voiced concern over the effect on low-income assistance programs and defense funding levels given current inflation.
Though Congress is likely to revise the proposal, Trump’s sway over the Republican Party could shape the final budget significantly.
