US President Donald Trump has persisted with his criticisms of Canada, yet this time, there’s a proposal being made. Using social media, the US president announced that Canada will receive “free access” to the Golden Dome defense system. Nonetheless, this will only be feasible if Ottawa agrees to Trump’s proposal to join the US.

The ‘Golden Dome’ system, the US’s latest missile defense initiative, will cost Canada nothing if it integrates as the 51st state of the US. Should Canada decline to do this, the defense system will expense the nation $61 billion.

“I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

The US president added that if Canada becomes the 51st state, the defence system will cost them zero dollars, adding that Ottawa is reportedly “considering the offer.”

Speaking to reporters, Carney stated that talks regarding the Golden Dome defence system are on.

“Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is good to have protections in place for Canadians,” Carney said at a press briefing last week. However, the Liberal party leader added that Canada is not and will never be “for sale.

Connections between the US and Canada have encountered difficulties, particularly following Trump’s inauguration as president. Due to his tariff alerts and efforts to unify Canada with the US, relations between the two North American countries keep worsening.

The Golden Dome is a novel US defense system designed to serve as a counter-missile defense. Reports state that the $175 billion missile defense system will safeguard the nation against “contemporary dangers” including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and hypersonic armaments. The system is anticipated to be functioning by 2029. Trump states that the Golden Dome system will “defend us—even if [the missiles] originate from space.”
