Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, expressing strong concern over the recent ascent of Mount Khangchendzonga by a team from the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS). The expedition, reportedly undertaken from the Nepal side, has sparked outrage in Sikkim, where the peak is considered sacred.
Khangchendzonga, the third-highest mountain in the world, holds deep spiritual significance for the Sikkimese people and is revered as a guardian deity. The CM emphasized that any attempt to scale the summit is viewed as a serious cultural and religious violation.
Tamang urged the Union Home Minister to initiate an inquiry into the incident and ensure such actions are not repeated. The state government has also called for respect for local sentiments and sacred geography, stressing the need for stricter oversight of mountaineering activities in the region.
