Senior Congress figure Shashi Tharoor has been chosen to head one of the seven all-party MP delegations that the government intends to dispatch overseas to inform significant foreign governments about the recent India-Pakistan conflict and India’s position on the matter. On Saturday, the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs revealed the names of the leaders representing India in its diplomatic efforts after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 and the Indian retaliatory initiative, Operation Sindoor.
Tharoor’s selection as an MP to head the delegation arises from his public support for the government’s management of the India-Pakistan conflict and Operation Sindoor. His comments backing the government’s military operations allegedly led to internal discord, and several Congress leaders voiced their discontent.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, announcing the names, stressed, “In moments that matter most, Bharat stands united”. “Seven All-Party Delegations will soon visit key partner nations, carrying our shared message of zero-tolerance to terrorism. A powerful reflection of national unity above politics, beyond differences,” he tweeted.
Alongside Tharoor, the other MPs leading the delegations include:
- Ravi Shankar Prasad (BJP)
- Sanjay Kumar Jha (JDU)
- Baijayant Panda (BJP)
- Kanimozhi Karunanidhi (DMK)
- Supriya Sule (NCP)
- Shrikant Eknath Shinde (Shiv Sena)
Tharoor, responding to the announcement, said he was “honoured by the invitation” from the government, adding, “When national interest is involved, and my services are required, I will not be found wanting”.
In the meantime, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh mentioned that Minister Rijiju conversed with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, the Opposition Leader in the Lok Sabha, about the issue. The Congress was subsequently requested to provide the names of four MPs for the delegations.
Ramesh also mentioned that the Leader of the Opposition had officially presented the subsequent names:
Anand Sharma, ex-Union Cabinet Minister
Gaurav Gogoi, INC Deputy Leader, Lok Sabha
Dr. Syed Naseer Hussain, Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha
Raja Brar, Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha.
Reports indicate that every delegation will comprise 5–6 MPs and will visit nations including the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The overseas trip is anticipated to commence post-May 22, with invitations already dispatched.
This action is a component of India’s diplomatic efforts to emphasize Pakistan’s involvement in cross-border terrorism and to foster global agreement. Rijiju is managing the organization of the trip.
The outreach occurs in the wake of the lethal Pahalgam terror assault that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. In response, India initiated Operation Sindoor, focusing on terror infrastructure beyond the border. In response, Pakistan tried drone strikes, heightening tensions until both countries decided to de-escalate on May 10 after military discussions.
