Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada next week to participate in the G7 Summit, after New Delhi accepted Ottawa’s invitation to the yearly multilateral event, the Ministry of External Affairs reported on Saturday. The Prime Minister will visit Cyprus and Croatia as part of his tour of three countries starting on Sunday.
The international trip, especially the visit to Canada, is important as it represents Modi’s first foreign journey since India initiated Operation Sindoor against Pakistan and his first trip to Canada following the decline in diplomatic relations between New Delhi and Ottawa over the Khalistani matter.
During the second part of the tour, at the request of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi will travel to Kananaskis, Canada, from June 16 to 17 to take part in the G7 Summit. At the summit, the Prime Minister will showcase India’s position on important global matters such as energy security, technology, and innovation, the ministry noted.
Previous reports indicated that Prime Minister Modi was probably not going to attend the G7 Summit in Canada, marking his first absence in six years.
The international trip will start with a trip to Cyprus on June 15 and 16, then attending the G7 Summit from June 16 to 17, and will finish with an official visit to Croatia on June 18.
Referring to India and Canada as “dynamic democracies,” the external affairs ministry stated on Thursday that New Delhi is optimistic the upcoming meeting between the prime ministers of both nations at the G7 Summit will present a significant chance to share perspectives and “discover avenues” to rejuvenate bilateral relations. This was mentioned by Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in answer to a question during his weekly media briefing.
“Our prime minister had received a call from the Canadian prime minister last week. During the call, Prime Minister Mark Carney invited Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) to attend the G7 (meeting), and as you are aware, the invitation has been accepted,” he said.
