Japan and China Accuse Each Other of Airspace Violations Near Disputed Islands

News Mania Desk / 13th May 2025

Tensions flared again in the East China Sea as Japan and China traded accusations over alleged airspace violations near the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. On May 5, Japan’s Defense Ministry reported that a Chinese military aircraft entered what Tokyo considers Japanese airspace, prompting fighter jet scrambles. China countered, accusing Japan of dangerous provocations and claimed its aircraft operated lawfully in Chinese territory.

The uninhabited islands, controlled by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan, have long been a flashpoint in regional relations. Both nations regularly dispatch patrols, increasing the risk of military confrontation.

These recent airspace violations highlight the fragile security balance in East Asia and underscore the need for stronger crisis communication mechanisms. With both sides standing firm on sovereignty, analysts warn that miscalculations could escalate into broader conflict, potentially drawing in allies such as the United States.
