If we had cut trees…: Omar Abdullah’s vague reply on Baisaran road connectivity

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sparked controversy with his ambiguous remarks regarding tree felling for road connectivity to Baisaran, a scenic meadow near Pahalgam. When questioned about potential environmental damage from such development, Abdullah responded, “If we had cut trees…,” without providing further clarification. This statement has drawn criticism from environmental groups and opposition leaders, who demand transparency and adherence to conservation laws.
The issue arises amid broader concerns over deforestation in the region. In Anantnag’s Rani Bagh, the lopping of branches from centuries-old chinar trees has led to public outcry, with officials claiming the actions were necessary for public safety due to diseased branches . Additionally, the Handwara-Bangus road project faces allegations of illegal tree felling and corruption, with reports suggesting over 25,000 trees were cut without proper clearance
These incidents underscore the tension between infrastructure development and environmental preservation in Jammu and Kashmir. Critics argue that without clear policies and accountability, such projects may lead to irreversible ecological damage.
