Govt Plans AC Temperature Cap to Tackle Heatwave Power Demand

News Mania Desk / 13th June 2025

In a bid to conserve energy amid rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves, the Indian government is planning to enforce a standard air conditioning temperature range between 20°C and 28°C across households, commercial spaces, hotels, and vehicles. The move is aimed at curbing excessive electricity consumption caused by extremely low temperature settings, particularly below 20°C, which are common during peak summer months.

This proposed rule is part of a broader strategy to ensure energy efficiency and reduce power grid stress during periods of high demand. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) has recommended that all air conditioners should have a default setting of 24°C, and efforts are underway to encourage public adherence through awareness campaigns and eventually mandatory regulations.

With record-breaking heatwaves and increased use of cooling appliances across India, the government believes this step will significantly reduce energy bills, cut carbon emissions, and improve sustainability. The plan is currently under review and may soon be notified officially, marking a significant shift in India’s approach to energy conservation and climate resilience.
