Google Expands Earthquake Alert System to Wear OS Smartwatches for Faster Emergency Warnings

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 14th June 2025

Google is enhancing its earthquake early warning system by bringing the feature to smartwatches running on Wear OS. Initially introduced for Android smartphones back in 2020, this advanced alert system will now notify users about seismic activity directly on their wrists. This update is part of Google Play Services version 25.21, as highlighted in recent system release notes, and marks a significant step forward in real-time disaster alerts for wearable tech users.

The Earthquake Alert System works by utilizing the accelerometers in millions of Android devices around the world. When these devices detect preliminary seismic movements—known as P-waves—Google’s servers analyze the data to determine whether an actual earthquake is taking place. If confirmed, the system sends out a warning before the more damaging S-waves arrive. This system offers users a few seconds of vital lead time that can help them take protective measures like moving to a safer location or seeking cover.

With this latest update, Wear OS smartwatches—such as Google Pixel Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch, and Fossil smartwatches—can now receive these alerts independently. This is particularly helpful if users don’t have their smartphones nearby, such as during workouts or while sleeping. Depending on the severity of the detected earthquake, the alert may either be a subtle notification (in cases of light tremors) or a loud, attention-grabbing warning for more serious threats. Crucially, these alerts can override silent or Do Not Disturb modes when necessary.

The feature is especially valuable in earthquake-prone regions like India, Japan, and parts of the United States. Google’s move ensures that people receive timely and life-saving alerts even when they’re away from their phones.Though not officially announced by Google, the rollout has already begun in phases. Users are encouraged to keep their devices and Google Play Services updated to benefit from this critical safety feature as it becomes more widely available.
