Five dead after falling off overcrowded local train in Mumbai, several injured

Five individuals lost their lives and three more were hurt when they fell from two local trains intersecting in Mumbai during rush hour. Railway officials stated that the event took place at approximately 9:30 am between the Diva and Kopar stations of the Central Railway.

As one train headed to Kasara, the other was approaching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. According to reports, all the deceased are aged between 30 and 35 years. Preliminary reports indicate that the travelers were riding on the footboards of trains that were passing by each other when they lost their balance and fell onto the tracks.

The guard of the train heading to Kasara promptly notified the railway officials about the incident. Subsequently, officials and law enforcement rushed to the location with ambulances and aided the injured. They were hurried to a hospital in Kalwa where five were pronounced dead.

Currently, the railway authorities are working to determine the identities of the deceased. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has conveyed his sympathies to the relatives of the victims of the accident.

“It is very unfortunate that a total of 8 passengers fell from a local train between Diva-Mumbra station and some of them lost their lives. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families,” he wrote on X.

Following the incident, the Central Railway has decided to run trains that will only have closed door.
