Veteran politician and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah was visibly moved as he undertook his first journey aboard the newly inaugurated Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat Express. Describing the moment as emotional, Abdullah said he had “tears in his eyes” while crossing the iconic Chenab Railway Bridge, the highest rail bridge in the world. The train journey, part of the newly completed Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, is seen as a massive step in connecting Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India.
Abdullah praised the engineering and hard work behind the project and acknowledged its tremendous significance for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that this railway line will be a game-changer, especially during winters when roads often remain closed and flights become unaffordable. The train offers a reliable, fast, and affordable transport option for both locals and tourists.
The leader also noted the broader economic and religious benefits of the new connection. He expressed hope that pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi and Amarnath shrines would now find it easier to travel, thereby boosting religious tourism. Additionally, he pointed out that the railway would help Kashmiri farmers and traders transport fresh produce—like fruits and vegetables—across the country more efficiently.
The Srinagar-Katra Vande Bharat train is part of a ₹43,000 crore project featuring advanced infrastructure including 36 tunnels and 900+ bridges. Abdullah hailed it as the “biggest gift” for the region, underlining its role in fostering national integration and regional development. His emotional reaction highlights the train’s importance not just as a mode of transport, but as a symbol of long-awaited progress and unity for the people of Kashmir.
