Dermatologist discusses the feasibility of glass skin for Indians and offers practical alternatives.

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 25th May 2025

Glass skin has become a trendy term in skincare, describing the luminous, smooth, dewy skin texture that looks nearly as flawless as glass, which is why it’s called ‘glass skin.’ This sought-after beauty trend has dominated social media platforms and skincare aisles as well. Initially, it appeared in Korean skincare practices, but now it has become worldwide. To attain this stunning, ultra-smooth skin texture, numerous individuals seek skincare products labeled as glass skin. However, is this trend suitable for Indian skin?

In an interview, Dr. Mikki Singh, the founder and chief dermatologist at Bodycraft Clinics and Salon, discussed how to realistically attain glass skin radiance and whether it is suitable for Indian skin types.

The dermatologist debunked this beauty trend, highlighting that what’s trending may not always be universally suitable. She said, “Glass skin, as we see it online, is as much about genetics, lighting, and filters as it is about skincare. And more importantly, what works for Korean skin doesn’t always translate well to Indian skin. Indian skin has its own strengths and challenges. We’re more melanin-rich, which gives us better natural protection against UV rays but also makes us more prone to pigmentation, tanning, and post-inflammatory marks from even minor acne or irritation. We also deal with high humidity, dust, pollution, and dietary variations that can influence the health and appearance of our skin.”

Dr Mikki urged people to be practical, reshaping the glass skin vision to align with what’s really achievable. She explained, “Instead of chasing an unrealistic ideal, I encourage patients to reinterpret ‘glass skin’ as healthy skin, smooth, even-toned, hydrated, and lit from within. It’s not about being poreless or perfectly reflective. It’s about balance, health, and confidence.”

The dermatologist shared with us a detailed guide on how to achieve a realistically healthy, glass skin-type glow:

  1. Hydration:

Strive for 2.5 to 3 litres of water each day, particularly in warmer environments like ours. To enhance advantages, incorporate coconut water, cucumber-infused water, or buttermilk, which all aid in restoring electrolytes and promote skin hydration internally.

  1. Good food :

Concentrate on foods abundant in vitamin C, vitamin E, polyphenols, and beta-carotene. A few great choices that are suitable for diets include:

Amla: Very rich in vitamin C

Pomegranate: Loaded with polyphenols

Turmeric: A strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent

Tomatoes: High in lycopene (excellent for sun defense)

Leafy greens: Such as spinach and fenugreek

Nuts: Particularly almonds and walnuts (rich in vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids)

  1. Exercise :

Target a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week, such as brisk walking, yoga, pilates, or dancing. Physical activity boosts blood flow, which increases skin radiance and aids in detoxification.

  1. Sleep:

Quality sleep is essential. Getting 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted rest each night enables your skin to heal itself. In deep sleep, your body enhances blood circulation to the skin and elevates collagen synthesis, both essential for a vibrant, youthful look.
