The India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC), a joint initiative of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and WWF India, organized a capacity building workshop titled “Promoting Low-Carbon Technologies in the Indian Steel Sector” on 8th May 2025 in Kolkata.
The workshop aimed to inform and educate stakeholders about cutting-edge technologies that can accelerate decarbonization of the steel sector—one of India’s most energy- and carbon-intensive industries. Topics of the workshop included carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), renewable energy deployment, waste heat recovery, waste-to-energy solutions, and the potential role of green hydrogen in low-carbon steel production.
Distinguished dignitaries and experts, who addressed the workshop were Mr. Debasis Dutta, Chairman, CII West Bengal State Council , Mr. Vishal Dev, Director, Sustainable Business, WWF – India, Mr. Rajiv Mangal, Vice President – Safety, Health & Sustainability, Tata Steel, Mr. R. Over 80 professionals, industry leaders, and stakeholders from the steel sector participated in the workshop, physically and virtually. The workshop offered everyone a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights and contribute to India’s green steel movement. It encouraged industries to adopt and promote renewable energy solutions and super-efficient technologies to enhance sustainability, reduce carbon emissions, and lower operational costs.
The India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) has a vision towards ensuring optimal reduction in steel sector’s emissions intensity by 2030. This initiative aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by driving the widespread adoption of energy-efficient technologies across India’s Steel industries.
