Air raid sirens sounded in Chandigarh and Patiala on Friday morning as tensions escalated between India and Pakistan. The warnings arrive merely hours after India successfully prevented a missile and drone assault from Pakistan on three military installations. The deputy commissioner of Chandigarh, Nishant Kumar Yadav, instructed individuals to stay indoors and avoid balconies.
“An Air warning has been received from Air force station of possible attack. Sirens are being sounded. All are advised to remain indoors and away from balconies,” the Chandigarh DC said in its advisory.
Residents in Patiala district were also advised to remain indoors and stay calm. The district also announced a closure of all educational institutionals until further.
“All residents of District Patiala are requested to remain indoors and stay calm. Please avoid stepping out unless it is absolutely necessary. All educational institutions in the district are closed until further notice,” the Patiala deputy commissioner said.
On Thursday, the Punjab government mandated the shutdown of all educational establishments for the following three days and revoked the leave of all police staff. As a safety measure, the district officials in Tarn Taran and Fazilka prohibited the use of firecrackers at weddings and other celebrations. The government of Punjab has established a control room for the convenience of the public.
In the Union Territory of Chandigarh, which is the shared capital of Punjab and Haryana, officials have announced the shutdown of all schools until Saturday. This followed the Indian military striking terrorist assets in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir as retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam massacre.
Pakistan escalated its unprovoked shelling across the Line of Control with mortars and heavy artillery in regions of Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in 16 fatalities.
