News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 3rd June 2025

Celebrated annually on June 3, World Bicycle Day honors more than 200 years of the bicycle’s influence on transportation and society. Worldwide, this day motivates individuals to choose cycling as a healthy, eco-friendly, and economical means of transportation, benefiting both people and the environment.
In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly formally designated June 3 as World Bicycle Day. The day was begun by Polish-American social scientist and professor Leszek Sibilski, who, along with his students, started a campaign in 2015 to promote awareness of the bicycle as an environmentally friendly means of transport.
The initiative was initially promoted by Turkmenistan and subsequently endorsed by 56 additional countries. Today, World Bicycle Day is observed globally with cycling events, activities, and awareness initiatives, all designed to promote the use of bicycles for a cleaner, healthier future.
The day emphasizes the significance of encouraging cycling as an eco-friendly means of transport to tackle pressing global challenges like air pollution, traffic congestion, and climate change. It motivates individuals to opt for bicycles instead of fuel-driven cars whenever feasible.
Moreover, the day highlights the advantages of cycling for health, promoting an active way of living, particularly vital in today’s mostly inactive environment.
