The Karnataka government has raised the compensation designated for victims of the stampede that occurred on Tuesday during the IPL victory celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.
Although the government first declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each victim and offered free treatment for the injured, relatives of the stampede victims will now be given Rs 25 lakh as compensation.
The announcement was issued by the office of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday evening. Up to 11 individuals lost their lives in the stampede close to the stadium on Wednesday, following RCB’s first Indian Premier League trophy win. All perished from asphyxiation when a large crowd, nearly three hundred thousand, attempted to enter the stadium to celebrate the team’s win.
After the incident, several FIRs were filed, and senior police officials, including the then Commissioner of Police B Dayananda, were suspended. MLC B Govindaraju was dismissed as political secretary to the chief minister due to his involvement in arranging the celebrations, whereas police arrested representatives from RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association concerning the incident.
