It never rains or it pours: Australia suffers two weather extremes in May

News Mania Desk / Piyal Chatterjee / 2nd June 2025

Australia experienced contrasting weather in May, with southeastern regions facing extreme dryness while eastern New South Wales recorded unprecedented rainfall. A low-pressure trough led to record high rainfall, especially in the Hunter and mid-north coast, where several stations noted over 200mm of rain.

Bellingen’s Promised Land station received 802mm, more than double its average. Conversely, southern regions like Victoria and South Australia saw rainfall over 70% below average, marking Victoria’s driest May since 2005 and raising winter bushfire risks. Average temperatures were notably above the long-term averages, contributing to severe drought conditions in South Australia.

High pressure over southern Australia is causing contrasting weather extremes, with some areas facing drought while others receive record-breaking rain, according to researchers. Associate Prof Ailie Gallant noted farmers are struggling and the end of these conditions remains uncertain.

Dr Kimberley Reid highlighted that drought results from insufficient heavy rainfall rather than just reduced averages. Current weather features settled conditions and clear skies. Autumn temperatures nationwide are significantly above historical averages, with predictions of continuing warm records into the coming years unless fossil fuel consumption is curtailed. This situation poses serious challenges for agriculture and climate stability.
