Veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee has recently been in the news for her frank admissions about her experiences in the Hindi film industry. In a recent interview, Moushumi shared how she has upheld her values and consistently maintained personal boundaries throughout her career, which has lasted over two decades.

One such value was refraining from wearing short and revealing clothing. Moushumi wed Jayanta Mukherjee prior to her film debut and began her career at the age of 16. In a conversation with Filmfare, Moushumi discussed her beginnings in the film industry, asserting that she resolved to wear only sarees.

While collaborating on Raj Khosla’s 1973 film Kucche Dhaage, featuring Vinod Khanna and Kabir Bedi, Moushumi recounted her outfit that stunned her completely.

She mentioned that Mani J Rabadi presented her with a backless blouse held by strings and a short ghaghra, which made her cry. “Seeing those clothes, I felt as if I had become naked. I started crying and made a call to my husband that please send me back to Kolkata. I don’t want to work here. They have taken away all my clothes. And he came running and made me understand that it was alright and then I completed the film.”

Moushumi also disclosed that she had said no to Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi as she was asked to wear short skirt in it. The film later went to Jaya Bachchan and became a cult classic.

Moushumi has recently made her comeback to the big screen after a break with the Bengali movie Aarii. Penned and helmed by Jiit Chakraborty, the narrative delves into the sacrifices and emotional connection between a bereaved mother and her son who cares for her. The movie, featuring Yash Dasgupta and Nusrat Jahan as well, premiered in cinemas on 25 April. Her most recent movie alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Piku, was re-released in theaters on 9 May.
