Since the release of Uzma Ahmed’s biopic, The Diplomat, on the streaming platform Netflix, the young survivor is back in the headlines. Uzma’s tale is undoubtedly harrowing, and the challenges she encountered in Pakistan after crossing the Wagah Border are beyond comprehension. The movie features John Abraham portraying ‘IFS officer JP Singh,’ alongside Sadia, Sharib Hashmi, Revathy, and several others.

The Diplomat tells the tale of Uzma, a young Indian Muslim woman who found herself ensnared in Pakistan under the guise of love. What ensued was a courageous battle led by not only Uzma but also Indian diplomat JP Singh in Islamabad and his team, along with then External Affairs Minister, the late Sushma Swaraj. When Uzma returned to her nation on May 25, 2017, after months of captivity in Pakistan, it was a moment of celebration for all. Her arrival in her country at the Wagah border was broadcast, and from that instant, she was known as the ‘Daughter of India’. Once she left Pakistan, Uzma Ahmed was contacted by producer Rakesh Dang to create a biopic about her life. She was overjoyed by the news and was instructed not to speak about her story with the media since a biopic would be created about her. As a signing sum and authorization rights, Uzma obtained Rs. 15 lakhs, which she used to purchase a one-room flat in Seelampur along with a Wagon R vehicle. The home turned into her haven, a refuge from the traumas experienced during her captivity in Pakistan. She isolated herself from the outside world and remained in her home for the first year, gradually beginning to reconstruct her life.

Uzma was only 22 when she married a man who became the father of Falak. It was a planned marriage, but it ended poorly due to the mistreatment she endured within it. Following her unsuccessful first marriage, Uzma traveled to Malaysia to pursue a course in business management. There, she encountered Tahir Ali via a friend who worked as a taxi driver in Malaysia.

After falling in love with him, Uzma crossed the border to meet Tahir who lived in Buner, one of the remotest parts of northern Pakistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the Afghanistan border. After visiting Buner, she got to know that Tahir was already married with four kids. She was abducted, drugged and forced to marry Tahir at gunpoint. She somehow managed to reach the Indian High Commission of Islamabad, and with the help of JP Singh, she crossed the Wagah border safely and returned to India.
