On Friday, the Trinamool Congress carried out a reshuffle in its district units, which included the removal of Anubrata Mondal, the longest-serving president of the Birbhum district unit and a long-time ally of party chairperson Mamata Banerjee.
In the list of recent appointments shared on Friday evening, the TMC did not identify any replacement for Mondal, who was granted bail in 2024 in the cattle smuggling case after serving two years in prison.
“The arrest of Mondal and his daughter by the Central Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement Directorate and the media focus on their expensive properties dealt a blow to the TMC’s image,” a senior party leader said, requesting anonymity.
In November 2023, a nine-member core committee was established for Birbhum during Mondal’s absence and has been given responsibility for the district. Former state minister Jakir Hossain will remain as chairman of the Murshidabad–Jangipur unit, while MP Khalilur Rahaman will serve as its president. Rahaman faced criticism from some party leaders following the violence in Jangipur sub-division last month during the protest against the Waqf Act.
In the Berhampore organizational unit of Murshidabad, Kandi MLA Apurba Sarkar will remain the president. Hariharpara MLA Niyamat Sheikh has been named the new chairman, succeeding Rejinagar MLA Rabiul Alam Chawdhury.
In the Bankura unit of Bankura district, Aloka Sen Majumdar, a leader of the women’s wing, has taken over from Arup Chakraborty as president. Mahua Moitra, a Lok Sabha member, will remain the president of the party’s Krishnanagar unit, which is her constituency in Nadia district.
