Nvidia CEO says next chip after H20 for China won’t be from Hopper series

Nvidia is considering strategies for the China market following restrictions imposed by the U.S. government on selling its Hopper H20 chip, but CEO Jensen Huang stated on Saturday that they will not release another model from the Hopper series.

Asked what their next chip for China after the H20 was, he said: “It’s not Hopper because it’s not possible to modify Hopper anymore,” Huang said, according to a livestream posted by Taiwan’s Formosa TV News network.

Huang, who has repeatedly stated that China is vital for Nvidia’s expansion, traveled to China right after the U.S. imposed new limitations on shipments of its H20 chips to China, which is the only AI chip the company can legally sell there.

This month, it was reported that Nvidia intends to launch a less advanced version of the H20 chip for China in the coming two months, as it aims to boost sales in the region, having lost market shares to local competitors like Huawei.

The U.S. Framework for AI Diffusion, released in January shortly before the conclusion of former President Joe Biden’s administration, intended to restrict AI chip exports to many nations.

Huang mentioned that earlier AI export rules were misguided and should have aimed at maximizing U.S. technology on a global scale. Trump announced he will revoke the AI diffusion regulations implemented by the Biden administration.

In the fiscal year that concluded on January 26, China produced $17 billion in revenue for Nvidia, making up 13% of the company’s overall sales.
