King Charles of Britain and several other prominent royals are set to join veterans and onlookers to witness a magnificent military parade and flyover, kicking off four days of events celebrating the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.
The government has organized a sequence of activities leading to the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender, which became effective on May 8, 1945. It is noted around that time in several nations, such as France, the United States, and Russia.
The festivities, which coincide with U.S. President Donald Trump’s push for an agreement to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, will commence on Monday when London’s iconic Big Ben clock chimes noon and excerpts from British wartime leader Winston Churchill’s VE Day address will be recited.
Over 1,300 troops from Britain’s military will parade through central London from near parliament to Buckingham Palace, observed by the king, Queen Camilla, Prince William and his spouse Kate, as well as Prime Minister Keir Starmer and conflict veterans.
Ukrainian military forces will also participate to demonstrate Britain’s ongoing support for Kyiv. In 1945, VE Day was met with exuberant festivities in London and throughout Britain.
The late Queen Elizabeth, at that time a 19-year-old princess, along with her sister Margaret, famously ventured out to join the crowd outside Buckingham Palace, thought to be the sole occasion during her 96 years she interacted with the public unrecognized. As the parade wraps up, there will be a flyover by historic military planes and the Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows display team, observed by the royals from the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
The royals will subsequently welcome around 50 veterans and others who experienced the war for a tea party at the palace.
