2026 Asian Games, athletes to stay at ‘Floating Village’ on board luxury cruise liner

In a groundbreaking move, the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, will forgo the traditional Games Village, opting instead to house athletes and officials in hotels and on cruise ships. This decision, announced by the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Organising Committee (AINAGOC), is a first in the history of the Games. Approximately 4,000 athletes and officials will be accommodated on cruise ships docked at Nagoya Port, with additional lodging provided in hotels across Aichi Prefecture and beyond. The shift arises from logistical challenges, as the Games will be co-hosted by Aichi Prefecture and the city of Nagoya, making a centralized village impractical. Organizers believe this approach offers a unique experience while effectively utilizing existing infrastructure and reducing the need for extensive new construction.
However, the plan has met with criticism from several Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) members, including representatives from Kuwait and Palestine, who argue that it undermines the spirit of unity fostered by a traditional Games Village. Newly-elected OCA President Randhir Singh also expressed reservations, emphasizing the importance of a collective village atmosphere for athletes. Despite the controversy, the 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to take place from September 19 to October 4, 2026, featuring a wide range of sports and cultural events. Organizers remain committed to delivering a memorable and efficient Games experience for all participants.
